Since 1982, the Chesapeake Chapter has actively recruited exceptional young men and women for the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Our member volunteers have identified, mentored, and sponsored over 150 candidates who went on to attend Kings Point. Here are some of our most inspiring recruitment success stories that exemplify the dedication and character of the next generation of maritime leaders.

The Class of 2025 Standouts

Midshipman Maria Rodriguez

Recruited by Capt. Robert Stevens (KP '85) from Annapolis High School. Maria became the first in her family to attend a service academy. She earned the Outstanding Plebe Award and is now Company Commander for her regiment.

Midshipman David Kim

Met through our summer camp program by member Lisa Chen (KP spouse). David's maritime family heritage spans three generations. He graduated Regimental Commander and accepted commission with Military Sealift Command.

Alumni Spotlight: The Stevens Family Legacy

Chapter member Robert Stevens (KP '85) has recruited five candidates over a decade, including his nephew and three neighbors' children. His dedication exemplifies how personal connections create lasting impacts. All five recruits graduated with distinction, with three becoming surface warfare officers and two entering the commercial shipping industry.

Sarah's Journey: From Cape Cod to Commandant

Born into a fishing family on Cape Cod, Sarah Mitchell was recruited by chapter member Captain James O'Brien (KP '78) during a maritime career day at her high school. O'Brien recognized her natural leadership and maritime passion.

"Captain O'Brien became like a second father to me," says Mitchell. "His guidance through the application process and his letters of recommendation were crucial. When I received my appointment, he was the first person I called."

Mitchell thrived at Kings Point, becoming the first female Regimental Commander from the Chesapeake Chapter's recruitment efforts. She graduated in 2023 and now serves aboard the USNS Walter S. Diehl, commanding an E-7 division.
