A Legacy of Service: Our Chapter History
The USMMA KP Alumni - Chesapeake Chapter stands as one of the oldest and most respected alumni chapters of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Our story begins in the immediate aftermath of World War II, when a generation of Kings Point graduates settled in the Baltimore-Chesapeake region and recognized the need to maintain the bonds forged at the Academy.
Founding Era: 1950-1960
On October 15, 1950, 52 charter members gathered at the downtown Baltimore Yacht Club to establish the Chesapeake Chapter. Captain William R. Peterson, USMM (Ret.) - KP Class of 1936 - was elected as our first Chapter President. The founding meeting established the Chapter's core mission: "To promote the welfare of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, support the maritime industry, and foster lifelong fellowship among Kings Point graduates."
Early chapter meetings alternated between Baltimore and Annapolis venues. Annual reunions were initially held at Fort McHenry's Officer's Club, a tradition that evolved into today's航母 event.
Growth & Expansion: 1961-1990
The 1960s through 1980s saw explosive growth as the maritime industry expanded during the Vietnam War era and beyond. Chapter membership grew from under 100 to over 500 active members. Key milestones during this period:
- 1963: Established the annual "Chesapeake Cup" regatta open to all KP graduating classes
- 1968: Launched the USMMA Candidate Sponsorship Program - providing financial aid to prospective students
- 1975: Dedicated the Chapter Memorial Monument at Fort McHenry
- 1982: Created the Student Mentorship Program pairing midshipmen with chapter mentors
- 1989: Established the Chesapeake Chapter Scholarship Fund at USMMA
Modern Era & Recent Achievements: 1991-Present
Entering the 21st century, the Chesapeake Chapter embraced technology and expanded its reach beyond Maryland borders to serve graduates throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Notable accomplishments:
- 2001: Launched the first Chapter website (kpchesapeake.org), connecting members online
- 2005: Celebrated 55th Anniversary Jubilee Reunion with over 400 attendees
- 2010: Established the "Future Mariners" recruitment program targeting high school juniors

Our archives - including reunion programs, photographs, meeting minutes, and member records - are preserved at the USMMA Alumni Association Museum in Kings Point, NY.
The Chapter honors its legacy by investing in the future: supporting USMMA recruitment, funding student scholarships, and maintaining vital connections between generations of merchant mariners. From 52 charter members in 1950 to 1,200+ today, we remain dedicated to being one of the strongest links in the USMMA alumni network.
